August 14, 2009 - Texan Faces Jail for Role in Fight Club
A fight club scandal at a Texas school for the developmentally disabled could land a former state worker in prison for as long as 10 years.
The same nine men and three women who found Jesse Salazar, 25, guilty of injury to a disabled person Thursday began deliberations Friday on his sentence, the Corpus Christi Caller-Times reports.
Salazar faces two to 10 years in prison and a maximum fine of $10,000 for his role in instigating fights among disabled residents at the Corpus Christi State School.
Authorities say for more than a year employees working the night shift in one of the school's dorms provoked residents into fighting each other.
The matter came to light last March when someone found a cell phone containing video clips of at least 10 fights at the school and turned it over to police.
In addition to Salazar, five former employees, three men and two women, have been charged in the case.
