February 24, 2010 - Pit Bull Blamed for Death of GA Infant

Authorities in Rockdale County, Ga., say a 5-day-old child died as a result of injuries she suffered during an attack by a pit bull.

Rockdale County sheriff's Sgt. Jodi Shupe said the infant, whose name was not released, died this week at Children's Healthcare of Atlanta, several days being attacked by the family dog, The Atlanta Journal-Constitution reported Wednesday.

Shupe said the girl's mother discovered the bleeding child inside the family's home last Thursday.

"As she entered the room, she was shocked to find the family pet on top of her daughter's bassinet," Shupe said. "As she approached the bassinet, she realized that the dog had bitten her daughter."

While the child was immediately airlifted to the hospital and eventually underwent surgery to repair her injuries, she died Tuesday.

Sharpe told the Journal-Constitution the fatal animal attack would likely not result in the filing of any criminal charges.
